People of the world know that original movies are always better than the sequels. And it’s probably because we expect the same standard of the original on the sequel, so we get picky. And we have a right to be.
So when they announced to make a second MBFGW, I was immediately excited but also a little worried. What if they messed up the story line?
When I saw the trailer, I knew it was going to be good.
But then when I was sitting in the theaters, watching the second movie unfold, I began to have doubts again.
As the movie went on, I’m not going to lie, I laughed plenty. But it felt like smaller laughs, not the big laughs I got from the first movie. But there were still the occasional big laugh.
But then, almost at the end of the movie, the story line hit me, and I began to tear up in the theater. Let me just tell you, that very seldom happens to me. It’s hard for me to cry at a movie theater, but the message about the entire movie was so beautiful that it was hard to not tear up.
Now, let’s get into the nitty gritty, but I will not promise for no spoilers. Although I will not spoil the minute details.
I think what is so great about this entire series, is that even though it’s specifically about a Greek family, we can all relate to it. We all have family members who are over rambunctious, who is always in each other’s business, who is so loud that it becomes embarrassing to be seen in public with them. But I think the important message of this franchise that it’s about love. It’s about love for one’s family, and for one self. Self love was more present in this sequel than in the original.
But more importantly, this movie was just about love.
About loving your odd and annoying family despite the embarrassing situations they put you through. And being there for each other.
I think that’s why for me, this sequel is just as good, if not better than the original. Because the essence of the characters are still the same, but the story line has become more clear through the years, and Nia (actress who plays Toula) seems to have a clearer vision for this movie.
This movie goes through three generations of love, and I think the fact that they were covering so many people and stories, that they didn’t really stay on preserving the moment as long as they could’ve. So in that way, I wish they spent a little bit more time with the new younger characters. But I’m also kind of glad that they kept the story very centered around the old characters and reminding us why we loved the first movie so much.
I loved this movie.
And I cannot wait to rewatch it.
Somehow, this movie became one of the few sequels that I can stand and thoroughly enjoy myself. I 100% recommend this movie. It’s family appropriate, and definitely a great movie to go watch with someone you love, whether it be family or significant other.
